Treatment Of Pigmentation

16 Nov 2020 Posted By Skinlogics

Pigmentation is a very common skin condition occurring due to the increased production of the pigment melanin, which is responsible for skin color. This increased production of melanin leads to uneven skin tone and dullness of skin. Freckles, melasma, dark spots, etc occur due to localized increase in melanin pigmentation. Tanning and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after acne or trauma are other causes of pigmentation over the face and body.

For the treatment of pigmentation, creams containing glycolic acid, kojic acid, azelaic acid, arbutin, niacinamide etc are used. These creams exfoliate the dead skin cells and hence help in decreasing pigmentation. Vitamin C and Vitamin E-based creams also help in improving the overall skin tone and texture of the skin. It is advised to use these creams strictly under the supervision of your dermatologist. Apart from these, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and thyroid problems need to be ruled out as these are also causes of pigmentation.

Apart from these, various treatments are available which help in getting rid of unwanted pigmentation. These are supplementary to creams and help in getting faster and better results. Chemical peeling is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment in which a combination of various agents are used which help in the removal of the superficial dead layer of skin and help in achieving smoother, uniform skin. It also helps in rejuvenation and provides a uniform skin tone. Chemical peels are very helpful in reducing acne spots, tanning, and uneven pigmentation over the face or body.

Lasers are also helpful in the treatment of pigmentation. They target melanin cells in the skin and burst them, which is then removed by the cells of our immune system. These are also helpful in the treatment of freckles.

Apart from creams and treatment, lifestyle modification also plays a very important role in preventing pigmentation. Sunscreen must be used on a regular basis on face and body, to prevent tanning. A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, yoga and proper sleep are the key to healthy shining skin.
